  • World’s Top 10 Super Computers
altCouple of days ago China launched world’s fastest super computer named Tianhe-2 which can perform 33.8 petaflops of calculation per second. This has let the other countries to scramble and find a way to build more powerful super computers though it will take some time to build it but for the moments China is ruling the super computer space with Tianhe-2. Let us go through the world’s top 10 supercomputers that have made an incredible mark on the mankind.

No.10 Tianhe -1A
This super power offering from China comes at 10th position in the race of top 10 super computers. This computer runs on 186,368 cores and is capable of performing 2.5 petaflop of calculation per second. It runs on Linux and offers 635 megaflops of calculation per watt.

No.9 SuperMUC
This German Supercomputer made by IBM ranks at no 8 in our countdown of top 10 super computers. It offers a whooping 2.89 petaflops calculation per second through its 147, 456 cores.

No. 8 Vulcan
Vulcan supercomputer operated by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory makes to number 8 in our list. You can also use it on a contract basis it offers 4.29 petaflops of processing power through its 393,216 cores this also is one of the most power efficient super computer producing 2177 megaflops of calculation per watt.

No. 7 JUQUEEN
This one is again from Germany manufactured by IBM, the super computer is based at Forschungzentrum Jülich research center it comes with 458,752 cores and churn out 5 petaflops of calculation per second.

No. 6 Stampede
Stampede super computer is run by The University of Texas it one of most powerful machined ever run by any educational institution. The computer is powered by 462,462 main processor cores with additional 366,366 of Intel’s Xeon Phi SE accelerator cores to attain a maximum data calculation of 5.16 petaflops.

No. 5 Mira
This is owned by U.S. Department of Energy, the Argonne National Labs and it offers a speed of 8.58 petaflops with the help of 786,432 total processing cores.

No. 4  K computer
K computer was built by Fujitsu for RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Sciences in Japan. The computer is powered by SPARC64 microprocessor with 705,024 cores and delivers 10.5 petaflops of calculation per second.

No. 3 Sequoia
This super computer from Livermore Labs runs on staggering 1,572,864 cores and offers 17.1 petaflops of calculation per second. Couple of years backs Sequoia was ranked at top most position but due to competition from other super computer it has slipped couple of position below.

No. 2 Titan
Titan’s Oak Ridge National Lab uses a massive 261,632 Nvidia K20X-model GPU cores for top notch performance which is connected to 560,640 main cores. It churns out 17.6 petaflops calculation, slightly above Sequoia.

No. 1 Tianhe-2
This is a real beast in terms supercomputing performance. It is powered by mind numbing 3,120,000 processor cores and 2,736,000 accelerators and offers 33.8 petaflops of data calculation per second which is twice the amount of Titan.
